If you look through the sample essays in your SAT test prep book, you will realise that despite what people say to the contrary, the most obvious factor that is common among all the published essays is the length. Simply said, long essays generally get higher scores than short essays. But producing a long essay in a short period of 25 minutes can be a difficult task for even an award-winning writer, and even more so for a high school student. But don’t worry, it’s actually not an impossible task. As long as you follow these tips on writing a killer SAT essay in 25 minutes, you should be well on your way in acing your SAT test.

o Write more than one and a half pages

So now you know you have to write a long essay to get a high score. But exactly how long should you write? Ideally, you should write more than one and a half pages out of the two pages provided to you. In fact, try to finish within the very last few lines of the last page.

o Write 4-5 paragraphs in your essay

Settle for 4-5 paragraphs that consist of an interesting introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs and a decisive conclusion. An inside source of the Princeton Review has revealed that the SAT essays are first scanned by computers to count how many lines are written and how many paragraphs there are. Essays that are either too short or unstructured (not enough paragraphs) are already given low scores (1-3) by a computer. Your essay is given a score before it’s even read by a real person!

o “Super indent” each paragraph

Now that you know your essay is being assigned a score from a computer, it’s important that you “super indent” each paragraph so that the computer will be able to identify new paragraphs in your essay easily. You do not want the computer to accidentally key in a low score because it didn’t realise that your essay has met the” 4-5 paragraphs” requirement. Consider applying two-inch indent (at least one full thumb-length) on the first line of each paragraph.

o Plan an outline, then speed write

Although time is limited, it’s still important for you to set aside the first two to three minutes writing a short outline of your essay. Jot down the gist of your thesis and two convincing examples that prove your point. The more impactful example should be written after the less impactful one.

Once you are done, spend the next 20 minutes speed writing. Remember to stick to your outline and write a decisive conclusion before time runs out. You should have some time to proofread your essay quickly. Time is extremely short though, so force yourself to write a concluding paragraph even in the expense of proofreading. You will not get a high score no matter how well your body paragraphs are without a conclusion.

If you have a couple of minutes to spare after writing your conclusion, check through your essay and make simple edits and corrections while making sure it looks generally neat and tidy

o Write legibly

It’s easy to let your handwriting look sloppy and messy when you are in a rush. But keep in mind that SAT test readers have hundreds of essays each day. If you don’t write legibly, they will not bother to spend more time than required to read your essay just to decipher what you wrote. You will then risk your essay not being properly read.

o Write clearly and succinctly

Ensure that you state each of your point clearly and succinctly in each topic sentence. Customise each of your topic sentences to reflect your essay’s thesis. Then elaborate on the topic sentence in your respective body paragraph. Keep in mind that the conclusion is the shortest paragraph in your essay. Try to end your essay with a thoughtful line to stand out to the reader.

o Don’t be a perfectionist

Remember that you do not have time to write an excellent, well-polished essay. Don’t expect to write your best essay during your SAT. The most important thing is to complete the essay on time.

Follow the given tips and you should be well on your way to write a kicker SAT essay. If you are not used to writing quickly, then remember to practise. You will be accustomed to it after a few times.

Because the majority of scholarships require applicants to write at least one essay, it’s very important that the essay you write speaks to the scholarship judges. Not only must you meet their specific criteria, but you must also make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors.

Additionally, you need to make sure the quality of your essay is up to par with their requirements, which may seem very intimidating. Many students struggle with the writing process to begin with, and having to craft a well-written essay on another topic may seem like too much work to bother with.

However, if you are serious about obtaining scholarship money for college, then you need to prepare for the fact that you will have to write an essay or two for most of the scholarships you apply for. While many scholarships have writing prompts you are expected to answer in your essay, the primary goal for judges is to gain an understanding of you who are as a person – your beliefs and ideas should show through when you’re writing the essay.

Starting the Essay

Unfortunately, the beginning of your essay is oftentimes the hardest part. How do you begin? Well, there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind when you’re starting your essay.

1. Understand the Purpose

First and foremost, you must gain an understanding of why you are writing this essay. What reason could the judges have had for picking their particular question to base your essay on? Analyze the writing prompt. Figure out why you are writing what you’re writing. You can also write down the essay question and figure out how many parts the question has, and what order you need to structure your essay in according to the prompt.

You can also figure out if the essay question requires any research beforehand, or whether the question can be answered through your life experiences alone. Additionally, because the ultimate goal behind any scholarship essay question is to learn more about you, figure out how the judges will learn more about you through your essay.

2. Goals

Before beginning any essay, you need to figure out what your goals for the essay are. These goals will vary depending on the specific essay question and whom you are writing the essay for. For example, one of your goals may be to show the judges through your writing that you have a healthy balance between your personal life and your academic life. Another goal may be to demonstrate that you were able to succeed despite many difficult obstacles you faced throughout your life.
These goals are only examples, and your goals may be similar or different depending on the essay topic. The bottom line is to formulate a set of goals for your writing and allow your personal character to show through. During this process, you’ll also want to develop an overall theme for your essay that relates you to the subject you are writing about, whatever the topic might be.

3. Create an Outline

While some people choose to begin writing without having a plan in place, for a scholarship essay you might find it easier to begin with an outline in place. With an outline, you can be sure you are covering every point you want to hit on in your essay, and you’ll have a guideline to follow when you’re trying to structure your essay in a logical way.

Once you’ve determined your writing goals, settled on a theme for your essay and created a general outline, it’s time to write the first draft. Notice I said “first” draft – an essay is rarely, if ever, ready on the first try. When you’ve written your first draft, it’s time to go over your essay and see which areas could use a bit of improvement.

Revise

The key to crafting a well-written essay is to show the judges rather than telling them. If there are specific examples in your essay that tell something, jazz it up by showing the judges why that’s important and how that example is relevant to your life and the essay topic. Additionally, remember to keep the essay in present tense as much as possible. It might not always work, but if you can use it, do so!

Another tip to keep in mind when you’re revising your essay is to eliminate as many unnecessary words as possible. You want to be as succinct as you can, which means saying what you need to say in as few words as possible. Sometimes you’ll discover that isn’t always possible, but if you notice a part of your essay that can be revised using fewer words, it’s always a good idea.

Double-check your introduction and ensure it’s captivating enough to gain the attention of the judges. If they aren’t interested by the first sentence, they’re probably not going to read the rest of your essay. In a way, your introduction is the most important part of the paper – it gives your readers an idea of what’s to come next.

Finally, you need to finish up with a solid conclusion. Don’t merely re-summarize every point in your essay. Instead, sum up the main point and keep it short and sweet. Once you’ve revised your essay, set it aside for awhile so you can come back to it with fresh eyes. You may discover it needs more work, and you’ll probably notice a few mistakes you didn’t catch beforehand.

Once you think you have a well-crafted, acceptable essay, you can congratulate yourself. You’ve made it through the hardest part of the scholarship application! Regardless of the essay topic or whom you’re writing the essay for, it’s important to keep the above guidelines in mind in order to create the best essay you possibly can. The important things to remember is to let your unique views come through in the essay so the judges can, ultimately, learn about you through the essay prompt.

Writing the scholarship essay may seem like an impossible task, but with a bit of hard work and the above tips to guide you, you can create a well-written essay that lets the judges know what a unique individual you are.

It’s a frequent assignment, and one which every student dreads: write an essay on writing. After all, who wants to write an essay on a topic they know little and care less about? But here you are, stuck with this assignment. What to do?

You could start by reading someone else’s essay. Essays on writing are great to read; it’s always surprising how much even talented writers struggle with their craft. Maybe something about another writer’s essay would strike you as interesting, and you could elaborate on it in your own essay. Even if you can’t find any use for the content, a published essay can at least serve as a good model for writing your own essay.

Remember also that an “essay on writing” is a fairly ambiguous assignment. So, you need to plan your angle of attack first. You could write an essay about proper grammar, or you could write an essay about how you personally relate to writing. In fact, one great way to go about attacking an essay on writing is to keep careful track of all the difficulty you are having with the assignment. Once you have compiled a sizeable list of complaints, write about them. But make sure your essay still has a point–even if you decide that your thesis is “writing is for dorks.” Just be careful not to offend your teacher!

Just because you are assigned to write an essay on writing does not mean that writing it has to be a miserable experience. This is a great chance to be true to your feelings and really express yourself. As long as you’re prepared to back up your points with specific examples, whether you love writing or hate it, you shouldn’t be shy to tell the truth about what writing is to you.

For most undergraduate programs in colleges in the US, high school students will need to take a standard exam like the SAT or the ACT. This exam is bound to include a timed essay – it rarely takes more than thirty minutes. Consider these tips on writing a passing essay for your next standardized entrance exam.

Do some practice essays. All essays have pretty much the same format, even standardized ones. They are normally about five paragraphs long. Your thesis should be preceded by a couple of introductory sentences. Then there are a couple of paragraphs that support your thesis and give examples from your readings. Finally, the last paragraph brings it all together and should complete your essay on a strong final point. By the time you have been through high school, you should have written many essays that follow this format. To be extra prepared though you should try to write a few practice essays and have a teacher or tutor go over it with you. Pay attention to the time limit for authoring the piece so it’s more realistic.

Go over the instructions carefully. Your nerves might be bothering you during the exam, but you have to try and relax. Go over the instructions for the essay carefully. Be aware that there is a difference between the words ‘discuss’ ,’state’, ‘review’, ‘list’, ‘compare’ and ‘explain’. All of these words instruct you to take a slightly different approach to writing the essay. Note down some pointers first of all. That way you will not forget to include the important points in your essay for sure.

Remember your basics. Whatever you do – don’t panic. You know the basic outline for a passing essay, now all you need to do is follow it. As you have probably been told many times in your high school English class, a good, passing essay is made up of three main factors: a definitive point of view, which is supported by examples, and is written in proper English. That is all. Knowing these facts, you’ll probably write a great essay on your next standardized test. If you really want to do well, follow these tips also.

Do a quick essay outline. Every minute counts when you only have 30 minutes to write your essay. Organize your time wisely and take a minute or so to write a brief essay plan. Give the main idea of each paragraph by using 5 jot notes. Then you will have an overview of your essay, which will let you write without stopping to ponder the next point. Ensure that your essay adheres to the instructions exactly so that you’ll get a passing grade.

Don’t write in the first person tense. A formal essay must not be written using the “I”. Unless your topic is about something in your life or about yourself, avoid using the word ‘I’ at all costs. This will make the tone of your essay much more professional.

No need to impress. Passing this essay is not really about impressing your professor with your big, fancy words but it is about putting as much information as you can into each paragraph. Keep in mind that you are writing to inform people not impress them.

Proofread your work. It is still necessary to proofread your work for common errors before you submit it, even though you will be pressed for time. Sure, it won’t be your best essay ever because you only had a half hour to write it. Therefore rewording the work is not important. Correct all spelling and grammar, follow instructions carefully, then submit your essay for the next standardized test.

There are six steps to writing an academic essay. If you follow each of these steps correctly, you will find that you can write university essays that will earn you a distinction (or high distinction) every time. It is simply a matter of understanding what steps to follow, and then completing each of them thoroughly.

This article provides an outline and brief description of each of these steps. It is an introduction to a series of articles that will examine each step in more depth. Reading just this article alone will provide you with assistance in learning how to plan, research and write your essays. However, reading all the articles in the series will allow you to gain a more sophisticated insight into essay writing, and to improve your grades even further.

These are the six steps you need to follow to write high quality university essays:

1. Analyse the Question

There are generally two types of essays: argumentative essays and explanatory essays. In an argumentative essay, you are expected to put forward an academic argument in answer to the essay question and support your argument with academic sources (references). In an explanatory essay, you are expected to explain or describe a process or topic in answer to an essay question and support your argument with academic sources (references). Regardless of the type of essay you are writing, it is very important that you understand what is being asked of you before you begin your research and writing your essay.

You must be sure that you understand all parts of the question and what it is asking you to do. You must be able to recognise the ‘task words’ in the question, which tell you what you have to do (for example, ‘discuss’, ‘compare’, ‘analyse’ or ‘argue’) and the ‘key words’ in the question, which tell you what you are being asked to write about (for example, Critical Thinking, or the roles of registered nurses). (More information on this step will be provided in the article ‘How to Write Distinction Essays Every Time: Step 1. Analyse the Question.’)

2. Draft the Essay Plan

You must write the first draft of your essay plan before you start your research. This will give your research direction and ultimately make it easier for you to write your essay. Having a plan will let you know what you need to research and how much research you need on each topic or subject that you will be writing about.

You will base this first draft of your essay plan on your essay question, and your current knowledge of your subject. It will not happen very often that you are asked to write an essay on a topic you know nothing about, since you will already be studying the subject and will normally have had one or more lectures or tutorials on the topic.

It is acceptable if your essay plan is rough or vague at this point, or if you do not have a great deal of detail. You will develop your essay plan (expanding it and including more detail) and possibly even change it as you go through the research process.

3. Conduct the Research

Part One: Organising your Research using a Research Document

Your research should be organised so that the transition from doing your research to writing your essay is simple. The best way to do this is to organise your research so that it matches the organisation of the essay. In Step 2 of writing an academic essay, you would have written a rough essay plan before you began your research. This essay plan is the guide you need to use to organise your research.

Copy and paste this essay plan into a Word document. All your research for this essay will be recorded in this one document. Use each of the dot points from your essay plan (topics you are planning to discuss) as a heading in your research document. When you do your research, you will organise it in the order that the information will appear in your essay. Doing this means you will be organising your research by theme or topic, not by source.

Part Two: Research Skills and Academic Sources

Being able to tell the difference between an academic source and a non-academic source, knowing where to find academic sources and deciding what sources are relevant to your research are important skills that you will develop during your tertiary studies.

The first place you should go is the library, even if this means ordering in books from other libraries. For academics to have their books (and journal articles) published, they must go through a process called peer-reviewing. During this process, one or more other academics who are experts in the field will read and assess a book or article to decide if it is of publishable standard. This is why your research will be of the highest quality if you use books, monographs, textbooks and journal articles written by academics for your research, because the work had to meet academic standards. There is no such process for publishing on the internet; anyone can write whatever they like on any subject.

Your second stop after books, monographs and textbooks will be journal articles. Some of these will only be available in hardcopy from the library, but many will be available in their full-text versions through online electronic databases, such as JStore, ProQuest and Ingenta.

4. Finalise the Essay Plan

In Step 2, you would have drafted a rough essay plan before you began your research. During the research process (in Step 3), you would have developed this plan further as you learned more information on your topic. Once you have completed your research, and before you begin writing your first draft, you need to re-think your essay plan and write a final version based on what you discovered during your research. Your final essay plan will contain more detail than your first draft and be a very specific guide to how to write your essay. Once you have completed the final draft of your essay plan, you are ready to begin writing the first draft of your essay.

5. Write the First Draft of the Essay

Now that you have completed your research in an organised way and have written a final draft of your essay plan, writing the first draft of your essay will be easier than it ever has been. All of the following decisions about your essay have already been made:

* What your answer to the essay question is
* What main points you will discuss in order to back up your argument
* The order in which to discuss your main points
* How long to spend discussing each main point
* What information each paragraph will contain (i.e. what information you will use to discuss each of your main points)
* What references you will use to back up your argument

Thus, there is no reason for you to feel lost or stare at your computer screen not knowing what to write. If you do get stuck for any reason, the best thing to do is to just keep writing. You can always improve something once you have written something down. If you have not written anything, not much can be done until you do.

6. Professional Academic Editing

Once you have completed writing your essay, it is vital that you have it professionally edited by an academic editor. You have just spent a significant amount of time doing the best possible job on your essay or assignment, doing your research and writing up your results. After all this effort, it is critical that your work is presented in the best possible way. Using a professional academic editor will ensure that your work is polished, well written, and presented correctly.

If English is your second language, having your essay or assignment professionally edited is even more important. You do not want mistakes in your writing to confuse your markers or distract them from the important arguments you are making. This could lead to you receiving a grade lower than the grade you really deserve.

Have you ever borrowed some books to start your research and realised you did not know where to begin?

Have you ever spent time reading a great deal of information that in the end was irrelevant to the essay or assignment you were working on?

Have you ever started to write your essay and realised you had too much information on one topic, and not enough information on another topic?

If you write a first draft of your essay plan before you begin your research, you will be organised, prepared and save time.

What does a first draft of an essay plan look like?

The first draft of your essay plan will show you what main topics you will discuss in your essay, how the essay will be structured, and roughly how many words you will spend on each part.

If your essay question was ‘Is Critical Thinking relevant to the role of a Registered Nurse?’ and you had to write 1,500 words, then your essay plan might look like this:

Essay question: ‘Is Critical Thinking relevant to the role of a Registered Nurse?’
Essay length: 1,500 words

Introduction (150 words)

1) Thesis statement: Through an examination of the evidence, it is clear that Critical Thinking is highly relevant to the role of a Registered Nurse for a number of reasons.

2) Introduce main points or topics to be discussed: accuracy of diagnoses, patient outcomes, prevent and solve problems, communication

Topic 1: Accuracy of diagnoses (300 words)

Topic 2: Patient outcomes (300 words)

Topic 3: Prevent and solve problems (300 words)

Topic 4: Communication (300 words)

Conclusion (150 words)

1) Concluding statement: Thus, it can be seen that the concept of Critical Thinking is invaluable and highly relevant to Registered Nurses.

2) Sum up main points or topics that have been discussed: accuracy of diagnoses, patient outcomes, prevent and solve problems, communication

Introductions and conclusions

As you can see from the example essay plan above, an introduction and a conclusion will normally be approximately 10% of the word count of the entire essay. (This is a general guide and does not apply to essays longer than 5,000 words).

In order to be considered a true introduction your first paragraph must do two things: 1) answer the essay question in a clear statement (this is called your thesis statement) and 2) introduce the main points your essay will make to support your argument. You cannot discuss any major points or topics in your essay if you have not introduced them in your introduction. Also, you must discuss all your main points or topics in the order that you introduce them in your introduction. This helps to maintain the flow and structure of your essay.

Similarly, in order to be considered a true conclusion your last paragraph must do two things: 1) re-state the answer to the essay question and 2) sum up the main points your essay has made to support your argument. Remember, a conclusion cannot contain any new information.

Body of the essay and topic sentences

You can find out how many words you will write in the body of your essay by taking away the number you will spend on your introduction and conclusion from the total amount. How you divide the number of words in the body of your essay between your main topics will depend on how important each topic is to your argument. How long you spend writing about each topic should reflect the importance of each topic. If all of your topics were of equal importance, you would write roughly the same amount of words on each. If one topic was more important, you would write about it first and spend longer discussing it. If one topic was less important, you would write about it last and write fewer words on it.

Using topic sentences at the beginning of each new paragraph is essential for ensuring that your essay is well organised and well structured. It also ensures that the essay flows logically and reads well. A topic sentence must do two things: 1) introduce the new topic about to be discussed and 2) shows how this new topic helps to answer the essay question or support your argument in answering the essay question.

If your essay question was ‘Is Critical Thinking relevant to the role of a Registered Nurse?’ and you were about to discuss the topic ‘accuracy of diagnoses’, then your topic sentence might sound like this: ‘Another way in which Critical Thinking is highly relevant to the role of a Registered Nurse is in ensuring accuracy of diagnoses’. This sentence clearly demonstrates to the reader that you are about to discuss ‘accuracy of diagnoses’ and you are doing so because it is another way that Critical Thinking is relevant to Registered Nurses, which is what your essay is arguing.
